Exercise 1. Editable Splines.
Exercise 2. Lathe Modifier.
To make the initial diagonal shape, the one we I will use Lathe on, I will use the snap button so I can only draw a line following the grid. This way, the lines are perfectly equal.
Exercise 3. Model from blueprints.
The first thing I am doing to do is set up the blue prints. I am going to create three planes (one for each blueprint image I have which are front, side and top) matching their size with the resolution of the material (the image of the blueprint) that I am going to give them. Once I have the three planes with the picture of the blueprints, before I can start modelling, I need to align them properly:
Then I will create a cylinder and I am going to start matching the size of the cylinder with the size of the body of the plane. Then I will convert the cylinder into a editable Poly. Once I have this done I can start moving vertices to give shape to the front and the read of the plane.
Now, I am going to select the appropriate polygons to make the wings. I will first extrude them a bit (not as a group, but using their normal) and then pull from them with the moving tool selected until I am happy with the wingspan. I will then move the vertices a bit to achieve the shape of the wings. I will then do the same with the "dorsal wing"
Finally, I will add the rear wings and the "belly". For the rear wings I will do exactly as I did for the wings. For the belly of the plane I am just going to select some vertices from the bottom of the plane and move them up a bit.
