I have already posted a couple of posts in which I stated my disappointment with the video quality of the animations 3ds Max renders. After spending a lot of time last week trying to find a solution for this problem (without getting into Mental Ray) I found a tutorial that helps you setting up the rendering in order to get a better quality.
So, as you can see those are the things to modify:
- In the renderer tab change the filter to Catmull-Rom. I have no idea what this means but it increases the amount of pixels I think. Then uncheck the Apply motion blur boxes.
- In the Advanced Lighting tab select the Light Tracer and increment the Rays/Samples from 250 to 500 (you can increase it even more but it takes much longer to render plus the difference is insignificant after 500 I think).

I know that this quality improvement is not the main point of this module but after using UDK last year I got used to good quality graphics. This is because UDK uses the Unreal3 Graphics Engine (which is used to make some of most famous AAA games right now such as Batman Arkham City, Batman Arkham Asylum or Gears of Wars 3) and makes everything look pretty. In the other hand 3ds Max lets the user select the engine for rendering which is great in the case of Mental Ray and V-Ray rendering. However, if the default Scanline Rendered is used, the engine is very similar to the Havok or Quake II graphics engine (games like Quake 2, Half-Life or Unreal Tournament used this engine) which is a good engine but it is visually not as powerful as Unreal3.
So after doing some tests playing with the rendering settings I achieved a video quality much better than the default one.

I think the difference is very big (so is the rendering time but I still have a lot of time left so it is alright) and makes my work look much better which always feels good.
A very interesting rendered that only captures the edges of the objects. Even if I have no use for this right now I thought it looked very cool.
